Publishing Secrets
I was inspired to present a paper at the Fall 2021 Meeting of the North Carolina Section of American Association of Physics Teachers by a talk I heard 20 years earlier. In 2002, Karl C. Mamola (pictured below), then Editor of The Physics Teacher, encouraged teachers to submit papers to the journal.
Although I focus on the journal Physics Education, the seven guiding principles also apply to The Physics Teacher. All full reprints are at doctorphys.com/publications.
The Original Abstract (Fall 2021)
"Publishing in the British Journal Physics Education." Michael J. Ruiz, Professor Emeritus, UNC Asheville Fall 2021 NCS-AAPT Contributed Talk. Presented at a Zoom Meeting hosted by Wingate University (Wingate, NC) and Davidson College (Davidson, NC), Saturday, November 13, 2021.
Abstract. Nineteen years ago Karl C. Mamola, then Editor of The Physics Teacher housed at the time at Appalachian State University, gave an NCS-AAPT talk on publishing in his journal. He was a supporter, an advocate, and publication cheerleader. His presentation has inspired me to give a similar talk on publishing in the British journal Physics Education. I will discuss the nature of this journal, my experience with referees, and subject matter examples. I will also offer some tips for success culled from my 30 publications in the journal from 2005 to 2021.
